The visionary filmmaker expanded the supernatural love story to animation in 1997 with A Chinese Ghost Story: The Tsui Hark Animation. One of Hong Kong's first and greatest animated features, A Chinese Ghost Story: The Tsui Hark Animation retells the famous tale of wandering tax collector Ning who encounters an enchanting maiden ghost and then her nefarious tree demon master. While drawing from the same source material as the live-action films, the animated version brings its own spin to the star-crossed love story and battle between good and evil. Tsui's script adds more comedic and satirical elements while the animation dazzles with bright and imaginative renderings of Ning's journey into the world of ghosts.
1987年，徐克監製、程小東導演的《倩女幽魂》是根據清代蒲松齡原著《聊齋誌異》之《聶小倩》改編，片中王祖賢與已故的張國榮扮演女鬼聶小倩及書生寧采臣，動人心魄，實屬是經典之作。1997年徐克再次把這段人鬼殊途之戀搬上銀幕，改編成幽默詼諧的動畫《小倩》，當年以全新的動畫特技和美術手法來包裝傳統的聊齋故事，呈現出與往昔鬼電影全然不同的視覺。榮獲第34屆金馬獎最佳動畫長片。
