Ran is a 1985 Japanese-French epic film directed and co-written by Akira Kurosawa. The film stars Tatsuya Nakadai as Hidetora Ichimonji, an aging Sengoku -era warlord who decides to abdicate as ruler in favor of his three sons. The story is based on legends of the diamyo Mori Motonari as well as on the Shakespearean tragedy King Lear.

Ran was Kurosawa's last epic, and has often been cited as among his finest achievements. With a budget of $11 million, it was the most expensive Japanese Film ever produced up to that time. Ran was released on May 31, 1985 at the Tokyo International Film Festival and on June 1, 1985 in Japan. The film was hailed for its powerful images and use of color—costume designer Emi Wada won an Academy Award for Costume Design for her work on Ran.
Synopsis :
On the eve of his 70th birthday, warlord Hidetora (Nakadai Tatsuya) has decided to divide his empire among his three sons. His youngest son Saburo (Ryu Daisuke) denounces the plan and is quickly banished, while the two elder sons Taro (Terao Akira) and Jiro (Nezu Jinpachi) gladly go along. However, Taro and Jiro allow greed to take control of them, waging a bloody war against each other for the control of the empire. Soon, Hidetora is banished from his own land, forced to go on the run from the lethal forces of both his sons.
