Synopsis:

Tokyo, the present day. After the funeral of his great-aunt Nunomiya Taki (Baisho Chieko), Arai Takeshi (Tsumabuki Satoshi) discovers the handwritten autobiography she was working on during the last years of her life. In 1936, at the age of 18, she left her hometown in Yonezawa, Yamagata prefecture, and went south to Tokyo to take up a job as a maid. After working at the residence of well-known writer Konaka (Hashizume Isao), she moved to the house of toy manufacturer employee Hirai Masaki (Kataoka Takataro), his wife Tokiko (Matsu Takako) and their young son Kyoichi (Akiyama Satoshi). Recently built in Ota ward, it had a modern-looking red tiled roof. Life was good in the kindly family, until Kyoichi was stricken with polio, but as Prime Minister Konoe Fumimaro took power and the Sino-Japanese War began in mid-1937 the national spirit was still high, with expectations of a victory in China and Tokyo securing the 1940 Olympic Games. Arts graduate Itakura Shoji (Yoshioka Hidetaka), a new employee in the design division of the toy manufacturer, became a regular visitor at the Harai home. An artist, and a northerner like Taki, he felt uneasy in business meetings between Masaki and his boss Yanagi (Russell Ishii) and got to know both Tokiko and Taki while Masaki was away on business. Masaki unsuccessfully tried to marry Taki off to Hanawa Kazuo (Sasano Takashi), a bachelor from Yamagata, and then told Tokiko to find a wife for Shoji. This threw Tokiko and Shoji even closer together, and they finally consummated their attraction. Taki was aware of the liaison but remained silent. And then, as Japan entered its war against the US, Shoji received his call-up papers.
